|
|
I wasn't sure where to post this, so I thought I would drop it in OT. I drive by the park area that is on the NW corner of Forest Hill-Irene and 385 every day, to and from work. The other day I noticed that there were 2 large signs (4' x 8', I suppose) for one of the candidates running for TN Governor placed on the land. One is south of the entrance, in the strip that is kept mowed by the road; the other is north of the entrance, placed between the sidewalk and the pond.
Now, I live in DeSoto County, so I "have no dog" in the TN Governor's race, and I can't even remember which candidate the signs are for.
I was just wondering others' thoughts on campaign signs being placed on land that I presume is owned by the county and kept up with taxpayer dollars. Do you think that this could be construed that the county endorses the particular candidate? I'm not looking to create a firestorm here, just looking for some other opinions and healthy dialogue. _________________

I am with the crowd that doesn't like any of the signs. When I go to vote, I got knowing the issues and who my candidate is, party or not. I vote for the candidate I feel will do the best job.
Funny story recently - my Mom was up here a couple of weeks ago and we drove around many areas looking for houses. She kept getting excited seeing all the "houses for sale" only to find out they were the small advertisements for one candidate or another. She made the statement "everyone of those people should have their signs ripped down and then they should be punished by having to look for a house for sale in a neighborhood where every house has one of those stupid signs in the yard." I guess when you are her age she is very opinionated. |

There are laws governing the placement of those signs. I realize many people are drawn to seek out a particular candidate's views when they see a sign with the candidate's name on it. Public land is just that, public. We own that land, and we are the people that are suppose to be the owners of that land. Having a sThose laws, in some areas, require that the signs be removed within so many days of placement, and is other areas, within a reasonable time after the election. Either way, if the politician doesn't remove their signs after the prescribed time allowance, they are subject to prosecution under the existing law for that area. A sign on public land does not express endorsement by the government. If it did, when someone places a yard sale sign on public land, that doesn't mean that the government endorses that particular enterprise.[/i] _________________ He that tooteth not his own horn is destined to remain in a perpetual state of untootedness.
