Information: Forrest Raids Dresden highlights the raid conducted in December of 1862 when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest visited Dresden, burning Union stores and cutting down the railroad trestle. The destructions of the railroads in Northwest Tennessee during that raid forces Union General U.S. Grant to rely on the Mississippi River for supplies.
The cache is located on property owned by the Dresden Industrial Board. Parking can be found by turning Highway 22 (4-lane) onto Evergreen Extended. As soon as you pass through the one-way tunnel, pull over to the right.
The cache is just over 400 feet from the parking area. The 4-star terrain is not for the long hike, but a very difficult hike. The area was logged out, thus creating a maze of fallen timbers and heavy brush. Also, there is a creek that must be crossed. My advice is to take the high ground and go over the opening of the creek and old railroad bed.
After you find the cache, take a look inside the tunnel. Inside are 4-5 stumps with axe marks made by the Confederate soldiers. |
