Cache: The Lake (GC12TM8)
Region: Southwest
Report submitted by prontopup on 2007-12-16
Information: There are a total of 4 caches in the Lichterman Nature Center: The Lake; The Deck; The Forest; and Lake Pavilion. The first 3 are relatively easy. The 4th one is a bit more challenging to find. None of these require you to go more than 40 feet (and maybe not that much) off a trail.

As the cache pages indicate, the starting point for all of these is the Visitor Center Building though which everyone must enter. At the front desk, the staff member present will provide you with a sheet of paper giving the exact coords of each of the 4 caches.

This is a very short walk from the Visitor Center. As you leave the Center, head north on a paved walkway. The easiest approach is to continue north on the bridge over the lake and then turn left (east) when your GPSr indicates you should. Follow that gravel trail a short distance (you will walk over a wooden bridge) until it intersects another trail which runs basically north-south. The cache is very close to that intersection.

Sometimes the trail route mentioned above is closed for repair (the gravel tends to wash into the lake and has to be replaced). If that trail is closed, there is a second approach. From the Nature Center go north and then follow the edge of the lake east (do not cross the bridge) through the grass. After a short walk you will come to a wide gravel trail on which you head north. After a short walk you will see another trail coming from the west and intersecting the one you are on. The cache is near the intersection as your GPSr should indicate.

You are looking for a black Pelican case which is slightly smaller than a regular ammo can. You can reach it from the trail so there is no need to bushwhack. You will see an old mechanical pump which was used to increase the water level in the lake. Ignore it because the cache is not on or beside that pump. The container is not too far from the pump, however.
